Renowned academic, Prof. Catherine Acholonu, is dead.
She died yesterday morning in Imo State from kidney failure which had ravaged her health since this year.
Born on October 26, 1951 in Orlu, Imo State, Acholonu is known for pioneering a new feminist ideology, Motherism, different from Western mainstream feminist movement.

She also did extensive works on Africa and Igbo cultural studies and was involved in the political development of Nigeria.
A former Senior Special Adviser, SSA, to President Olusegun Obasanjo on Arts and Culture, and foundation member of the Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA, Acholonu was also a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. She contested for the post  of Nigerian president in 1992 and Senator in 2003.

A member of PDP  National Women Mobilization Committee and the Imo State Woman Leader of PDP in the formative years of the party, Acholonu was also the national spokesperson of the Movement for Gender Parity, a gender-advocacy group that was in the frontline for the demand for and attainment of the post of the First Woman Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Achololu’s books include Motherism; Earth Unchained; The Gram Code of the African Adam; Who’s the head or state and They Lived Before Adam.

She founded Professor Catherine Acholonu’s Research Centre, based in Abuja, to engage Africa’s pre-history, stone inscriptions, cave art, and linguistic analysis of ancient symbols and communication mediums from the continent. Her work is reported to make a very persuasive case for the re-evaluation and possible rewriting of world history to ensure the contributions of the ancestors of indigenous Africans in it.
