Wike’s Aide Discloses ASUP Strike Would Have Ended Long Ago:

Nyesom-Wike

The Special Assistant to the Supervising Minister of Education, Lambert Oparah, has disclosed that the hardline position of leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), is what made the union embark on another strike action which was supposed to have been resolved long ago.

He stated this over the weekend while monitoring the JAMB Computer-based Test in Abuja , adding that the supervising minister of Education, has demonstrated a lot of commitment to end the ASUP Strike, as he did during ASUU’s.

He said, `I personally attended several meetings initiated by the minister with ASUP representatives where he laid the cards on the table and urged the union to accept the offers made by government and end the strike.”

“It is sad that each time, the union leaders would say they will go back to consult with their members, they end up rejecting the offers made.”

Oparah said one of the contentious issues  boarders on the payment of the arrears to the striking lecturers adding that given the huge amount involved, government offered to pay them on two instalments, which the union rejected in writing.

“If they have now accepted the offer as originally proposed,  the right thing to do is to communicate to the minister in writing as they did when the offer was rejected.”

“As it is now, most of the contentious issues with ASUP  have been addressed, a committee has been set up to harmonize the First Degree and HND dichotomy and boards of the various polytechnics and colleges have been inaugurated’’

Oparah added that despite the challenge of the prolonged strike inherited from previous administration, Wike, had, within the past few years, provided the critical leadership that would place the nation’s education sector on a sound footing.

`The basic education sub-sector for example has witnessed tremendous upliftment through infrastructural development, rehabilitation and provision of teaching and learning materials.”

“Today, the federal government colleges hitherto rejected by many parents are now centres of attraction,” calling on ASUP to call off its strike in the interest of “our children and our future.”  (Leadership)
