ASUU Fires Back at FG Over ASUP, COASU ‘No Work No Pay’ Policy:

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday fired back at the federal government over the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP and the College of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU strike by stating that there will be no work without pay.

This was stated yesterday by the national president of ASUU, Dr Nasir Isa Fagge, during a media briefing where he reacted to a statement attributed to President Goodluck Jonathan at a media chart concerning the striking lecturers.

Fagge noted that in as much as it is true that the constitution stipulates the no work, no pay policy, the demands of the lecturers are genuine and not out of place, and therefore advocated for a no pay, no work policy.

While calling on the federal government to respect agreements reached by the unions which he said is the simple way out, Fagge said, “It is not good for a government to enter into an agreement with trade unions and renege. What ASUP and COEASU are facing is not different from what ASUU faced and their demands are in order”.

Furthermore, the union condemned the role played by the Nigeria police during the peaceful demonstration of ASUP and COEASU members. He said that peaceful protest was one of the generally acceptable ways of expression and communication in any civilised system and as such, “We are not aware that there is any law proscribing and or prohibiting protest in Nigeria for now”.

While stressing that the action of the police can be compared to the brutalisation of citizens by the worst military regimes in Nigeria, he emphasised that “Dictatorial tendencies in dispersing peaceful protesters should not be resorted to or tolerated in Nigeria.

“ASUU therefore, unreservedly condemns in totality the inhuman and barbaric attacks by the Nigeria Police on protesting members of ASUP and COEASU “. (Leadership)
