Kogi State Teachers Protest Salary Delay, Arrears:

No fewer than 200 teachers from Primary and Junior Secondary Schools in Kogi State on Tuesday protested against  the alleged non-payment of their two months’ salaries and other entitlements.

Our correspondent gathered that the teachers protested against the non-payment of their February and March salaries.

They were also said to have protested against the alleged failure of the state government to fully implement  the new minimum wage.

The protesters matched along major streets in Lokoja, chanted war and anti-government songs.

They also accused the state government, led by Capt. Idris Wada, of being insensitive to their plights.

They also carried placards with various inscriptions, decrying their alleged indebtedness.

The protesting teachers blocked the main gate to the Kogi State Universal Basic Education Board office.

They were said to have paralyzed activities at the office and made human and vehicular movements difficult for hours.

The Kogi State Chairman of the Basic Education Staff Association of Nigeria, Mr. Adomu Suleiman, who led the protesters, said the teachers
would not resume duties at the beginning of new term until their demands were met.

He stated that the protesters were demanding the immediate payment of their February and March salaries.

He added that the teachers were demanding payment of their annual increment since 2010 and payment of their 2011, 2012 and 2013 leave bonuses as well as  arrears for promoted teachers since 2009. (Punch)
