Federal Polytechnic, Oko Rector Denies Sponsoring ASUP Strike:
Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, Professor Godwin Onu, yesterday denied the allegation that he was among those sponsoring the protracted strike by members of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, and withholding salaries of some widows from Oko for no justifiable reasons.
Onu, who spoke at a meeting with members of the governing council of the institution, also denied that he was planning to relocate the polytechnic from Oko to his home town, Ezira in Orumba South local government area.
The meeting, it was gathered, was to brief members of the newly constituted governing council on the recent happenings in the institution, including the face off with a section of the community.
He expressed worry that though his second tenure started on March 5, 2014, there had been so much acrimony being generated by some people from the host community which, according to him, culminated in the banishment of 13 people from the community for supporting the management of the polytechnic.
Such allegation and the tension being generated, he observed, were not in the best interest of the community and the institution.
He said: “There are no plans to relocate the polytechnic to Ezira my home town. Those making the allegation should know that no Rector or anybody can relocate the polytechnic without legislation from the National Assembly.
“It is also not true that we have seized the salaries of widows from Oko or that we are sponsoring the ongoing national strike. I want to advise people to always verify whatever they hear to avoid dishing out wrong information to members of the public.”
Onu reiterated the resolve of his administration to make Federal Polytechnic, Oko, one of the best in the country, adding that with the composition of members of the governing council, the institution would surely move from strength to strength.
The chairman of the governing council, Dr. Azubuike Odukwe, said members of his team were prepared to transform the institution, adding that with their wealth of experience and connections, the polytechnic would continue to move forward. (Vanguard)
