Fayemi, Fayose Disagree on Students’ Performance in State Exams:

Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi and the governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Mr. Ayo Fayose, have disagreed on the performance of pupils of the state in public examinations.

Fayose, had in a statement made available to our correspondent on Friday by his media aide, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, claimed that the 34th position of Ekiti State in the recently released WAEC examination result was unacceptable.

The PDP governorship candidate said that he was ready to engage Fayemi in a public debate on the education sector as well as other sectors.

The statement said, “The governorship candidate of the PDP, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, is prepared to meet Governor Kayode Fayemi not only on education but on all areas because his (Fayemi) administration has impoverished the people of Ekiti State morally, socially and economically.

“Fayemi stands for the elite. Ekiti people don’t want a governor ruling them from abroad.

“Teachers are the vehicle driving education but there is a disconnection between the teachers and Fayemi administration. How can a governor who wants to achieve success in the area of education be at loggerheads with teachers?

“The relationship between Fayemi and Ekiti teachers as well as the local government workers is not cordial.”

But the Commissioner for Information in Ekiti State, Mr. Tayo Ekundayo, described the claims of Fayose as a lie, which he said was fabricated to discredit Fayemi’s achievements.

The commissioner asked Fayose to choose a date saying his principal was ready to “tear apart the tissues of lies which Fayose is telling to the unsuspecting people.”

He said, “We have a pass rate of 70 per cent in the 2013 WAEC and NECO result. The records are there and this is verifiable. Despite this, we are not resting on our laurels because 70 per cent is not okay with us.

“We met 20 per cent pass rate when we assumed office in 2010 and it was worse than that when Fayose was the governor. Let him tell the people the pass rate when he was in office before he was booted out.”

Ekundayo stated that WAEC had commended the administration of Fayemi for successfully stopping examination malpractices in the state.

But he said that examination malpractices were dominant in the state when Fayose was governor. (Punch)
