FG Plans to Create UBE Special Vocational Schools in Delta:

THE Federal Government, weekend, performed the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the Universal Basic Education Special Vocational School in Evwreni, Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State.

It disclosed that it had set aside funds to build and equip one model UBE special vocational school in each of South-East and South-South states, adding, “when completed, these schools will be handed over to the states which will provide staff after which academic activities will commence.”

Minister of Education, Chief Ezenwo Wike, at the ceremony, said Delta State was one of the 11 states that are benefiting from the Boy-Child Intervention Programme of the Federal Government, adding that the event was a clear signal that government was leaving no stone unturned in laying a solid foundation for the transformation of the society.

He said: “The inability of the boy-child to access education, especially in the South-East and South-South geo-political zones, is of concern to the Federal Government. This was why the boy-child integration programme was initiated.

“This intervention is a deliberate effort to address the challenges associated with lack of interest in, and the inability of the boy-child to access basic education opportunities and complete his education. The integration effort is strategic in the sense that it offers functional and skill-based educational programme to the boys.”
Wike stressed that the programme was “one way through which states are expected to emulate and scale up, taking into consideration, the peculiar needs of their citizenry.”

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr. Dikko Suleiman, said the UBE Special Vocation Schools when fully operational are expected to offer special vocational training for boys in line with specific business and economic priorities of host environment.
