Lecturers Call for Re-Introduction of Indigenous Languages

Lecturers Call for Re-Introduction of Indigenous Languages :

Some university lecturers on Wednesday called for the re-introduction of indigenous languages for teaching primary and secondary schools students and even undergraduates in Nigeria.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews that education would be complete and developed if indigenous languages were used in classes.

Prof. Dayo Duyile, a Senior Lecturer in the Mass Communication Department, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun, said the use of indigenous languages would help to develop the students.

“Education is not complete without indigenous languages because this is the easiest way of communication.

“When we learn in our own mother’s tongue, it makes things easy for both the lecturers and the students.

“There are things you want to explain to the students that cannot be well expressed except you explain it in a language that will be clearer to them,’’ Duyile said.

Prof. Ayo Fadahunsi, Dean, Faculty of Arts, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun, said indigenous languages should be adopted to make teaching and learning easier at the tertiary level.

“Indigenous languages should also be used in teaching our undergraduates to make their learning.

“It is good we adopt indigenous languages in our classrooms. When you do something in your language, it is very good,’’ he said.

Fadahunsi urged the Federal Government to adopt and implement the policy, saying that the country had enough resources to adopt it.

Dr Sule Sheidu of the Department of Education Administration, University of Lagos, said indigenous languages should be used from the primary to the tertiary levels.

“If the country can put this development into consideration, I think it will help our students.

“The use of indigenous languages would be a very good development. It is used in countries like South Africa and others,’’ Sheidu said. (NAN)
