SSANU-LASU Threatens Strike, Issues 7 days Ultimatum To Management

SSANU-LASU Threatens Strike, Issues 7 days Ultimatum To Management:

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo Chapter, on Friday urged its management to meet its demands within one week to avert a strike.

Mr Saheed Oseni, the SSANU Chairman, said in Lagos that the decision to give the management one week to act was taken at the union’s congress.

Oseni said the state government and the institution’s management had failed to meet the demands of the union since it suspended its three months strike on Jan.13.

The union suspended the strike after the government promised to meet its demands.

SSANU had demanded for the implementation of the 2011/2012 staff promotion, which was pending due to the ‘No vacancy, No promotion’ policy by its management.

It also demanded for the implementation of the 65 years retirement age for its members, and the reversal of the hike in school fees.

The union leader said the representatives of the state government had promised to meet the demands of the union in a meeting with the union executives in September, 2013.

“The government had, through its representatives, requested that we submit the list of staff members who are yet to be promoted, to act on it and direct the management to finance it.

“The union had sent the list since Dec.5, 2013 but nothing has been done,” he said.

Oseni said that SSANU’s National Executive had met the university management in February, and they (management) had promised to present the issue for ratification at the governing council’s meeting.

According to the chairman, the university’s council meeting has been held twice afterwards, but the issue of the union was not resolved.

“We suspended our strike to give the state government and the management a benefit of doubt, but since they have failed, we would resume back.

“We are giving the management and government only one week grace, to meet our demands or face another industrial action,” he said.

Oseni said that promotion of staff was a right and not a privilege and any member of staff who met the criteria, should not be denied. (Daily Times)
