UBEC Boss Demands Support for MDGs to Achieve Targets:

The acting Director, Department of Academic Services, Universal Basic Education Commission, Mr Pius Osaghae, has urged stakeholders to support MDGs’ office to enable it to achieve its targets by 2015.

Osaghae told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that the support would help to achieve the MDGs goals to better the lives of Nigerians.

He urged the stakeholders to continue to push for a transformative goal on achieving MDGs two, aimed at achieving universal primary education.

He said that education would help one to realise his or her potentials. It also empowered and developed understanding of the current events in the world.

According to him, the Federal Teachers’ Scheme, through the UBEC, has been on for quite some time, and its upkeep was supported by the MDGs office.

He noted, “The scheme has added quality to the numbers of teachers we have and also restructured and improved the standard of learning in various schools across the country.

“It has also helped in building of classrooms, provision of equipment, furniture and training and re-training of teachers. All these have been achieved by the MDGs office and it has helped to improve the quality of education in the country.”

Osaghae said that the scheme was to tackle the shortage of qualified teachers and improve the standard of pupils in primary schools.

He said that MDGs, through its effort to ensure better education in the country, had distributed three million free exercise books to encourage pupils to read extensively.

The books were released to schools in the 36 states and the FCT, as a part of the scheme.

He noted that this was an evidence of the commitment of the Federal Government to the realisation of the MDGs.

The acting director said the efforts would complement those of UBEC and improve standard of education in the country.

“So many parents may not have enough money to buy books; it is a very big relief for us. It will help to motivate the pupils to be able to stay in schools and will encourage them to improve on learning.

“It will also facilitate the work of teachers because the availability of the exercise books help to motivate them to teach.We are moving very fast towards achieving the MDGs goal, so I urge every citizen to work hard to ensure that we achieve these goals by 2015,” he explained.
