President Goodluck Jonathan has said there is an urgent need to restructure the educational system to meet the present and future needs of the country.

This is even as no less than N700 billion has been spent by the federal government in the past five years, besides budgetary allocations, to improve the educational system in the country.

Speaking at the Presidential Policy Dialogue at the opening of the 20th Nigerian Economic Summit (NES #20) in Abuja yesterday, Jonathan  said that the policy underpinning education system in Nigeria which was developed 44 years ago needed to be reviewed to suit the transformation agenda of the federal government.

The president who was represented by Vice President Namadi Sambo, he said the policy underpinning the education sector in Nigeria as agreed in 1969  is ripe for review.

He called on the summit to take up the challenge in designing an educational system that is in line with the country’s aspiration.

Jonathan dismissed the arguments by some of the discussants at the debate that the federal government lacked the political will to reform the sector.

Those that participated in the debate with the President are Nigeria’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Amb Maryam Katagum; Chairman, West African Examination Council, Prof Pius Obanya; Vice Pesident, Human Development, World Bank, Dr Elizabeth King; and Administrator, New Horizon College, Minna, Mrs Maryam Lemu.

Others are Vice Chancellor Federal University of Dutse, Jigawa, Prof Jibrilla Amin, Managing Director, Diamond Bank Plc, Mr Alex Otti and  minister  of Education, Mr Nyesom Wike. (Leadership)
